Sustainable Garden Party Tips
1. Bring Out the Plant-Based Food
Traditionally, meat has been a focus of many garden parties.
But this isn’t the case now.
Plant-based foods are a hot garden party trend.
And, they’re good for the planet.
It’s common knowledge that livestock farming practices are heavy contributors to greenhouse gas production and require excessive use of water.
So, embracing a plant-based focus instead of meat is a great start to planning your eco-friendly garden party.
Need some ideas for food to include?
The good news is that there are many amazing
plant-based recipes that can help you impress your guests.
Here are a few other ideas to ignite your inner Gaz Oakley.
– Grilled BBQ tofu kebabs
– BBQ cauliflower wings
– Vegan coleslaw
– Herbed potato salad
2. Swap Out Plastic Plates and Cutlery
Plastic disposable cutlery has been a mainstay of garden parties for many years.
But, we’ve all seen how much damage plastic does to the environment.
So, it’s time to trust your guests with glassware and ceramic dishes instead.
This is such a simple swap to make and it will make a huge difference to the environment if every garden party host does it.
Want to avoid breakages?
You do have biodegradable party crockery options to choose from.
Plates and cutlery made from palm leaves are super fashionable.
And, they’re completely eco-friendly.
You can also grab some bamboo napkins so your guests can keep their hands and clothes clean.
3. Ditch Balloons and Other Decorations
Decorations may be a fun addition to your garden party.
But they can also be deadly.
Latex balloons take anywhere from six months to four years to decompose completely.
In the meantime, they clog up landfills.
And, wildlife can mistake them for food and choke on pieces of latex.
So, latex decorations, including balloons, are NEVER a good idea.
There are eco-friendly versions of traditional decorations.
But, why not take some flowers from your garden, like cow parsley, and use them to brighten your garden party space instead.
Flowers add real sparkle to your event and they’re a great talking point.
You may want to ask your guests to bring a few blooms from their own garden for an added variety of colour.
Here’s another fun idea for decorations that we love.
Remember those paper chains you made as a child?
Keep magazines and other paper products, add a little glue, and you can make your own unique paper chain creations as an adult.
4. Stay Local with Your Purchases
Do you have a farmers market close to where you live?
Many towns and cities have these markets regularly now, as well as rural areas.
If you do have a local farmers market, shopping there for your garden party goodies makes sense.
The produce is fresh and often you can find organic items.
Plus…
Supporting local farmers and producers reduces the amount of transportation involved in getting the produce to you.
This means the items you buy have a lower carbon footprint attached to them.
Don’t forget your “bags for life” when you’re headed to the farmers market.
You can get really cool prints on these bags and using them gives you lots of brownie points for sustainability.
5. Go Organic
Wherever you buy your garden party food from, it’s a good idea to choose organic produce.
Organic farming has an eco-friendly ethos as it reduces the pollution of groundwater, keeps toxins away from wildlife, and promotes biodiversity.
So, opting for food items produced organically is an excellent way to make your garden party more sustainable.
Plus, you and your guests get to eat fresh produce that isn’t covered in pesticides.
That can only be a good thing, right?
6. Send a Bring Your Own Cup Invitation
We love this fun idea for making your garden party drinking kinder to the environment.
Just ask your guests to bring their own reusable drinking vessel with them.
Although we’ve titled this BYOC (bring your own cup) other choices like flasks or mason jars are just as acceptable.
You can add a little extra buzz to the occasion by making this competitive.
Create a reward for the “most imaginative” or “best decorated” item.
Everyone will have fun joining in.
7. Encourage Guests not to Leave Empty Handed
Limiting waste is a must if you’re hosting an eco-friendly garden party.
One great way of doing this is to ask guests to take leftover food and decorations home with them.
You’ll find that many people will be only too happy to have goodies to take at the end of the event.
There are a couple of other waste limiting practices you can use:
– Compost any leftovers you can. This is good for the planet and for the soil in your garden.
– Only bring out food that’s likely to be eaten. Instead of setting out everything you bought at once, keep some items back and only use them if the food on the table is insufficient.
8. Go Digital With Invitations
Paper invitations are often popular for garden parties.
This is especially the case if there’s a special event, like a birthday, involved.
But, protecting paper as a resource is important.
Many people recognise this and opt for recycled paper as a result.
But, avoiding paper altogether is a better option.
You can create amazing creative invitations digitally and send them electronically.
There are several sites where you can design your invitations, such as Canva and Evite.
It’s a fun way to spend some time and helps you embrace the sustainable vibe for your garden party.
9. Choose Charities or Experiences as Gifts
Some garden parties are just an excuse for a get-together while the sun is out.
But, if you’re hosting a garden party for a special event, presents are likely to be involved.
This can mean receiving a lot of “stuff” that takes up space and you don’t use often.
Experiences are a better choice of gift especially if they keep your carbon footprint low.
Or, you may prefer that others get something on your behalf.
Asking for charity donations is a great way to make this happen.
Whether you decide to ask for experiences or charitable contributions do so carefully.
Make it clear that you’re more interested in people’s attendance than in gifts.
And, clarify the reasons for your choice for those people who do want to give you a present.
10. Embrace Your Garden Environment
If you’re having an eco-friendly party in your garden it makes sense to embrace the natural beauty of the space.
You can use your flowers and plants as immersive decor for the event.
Or, you can go one step further and create an event to help you design or spruce up your garden area.
Whether the people you invite are green-fingered or not there’ll be plenty of scope for them to get involved even if it’s only by overseeing the refreshments or doing the manual work.
This type of party is a win-win for everyone.
You get a beautiful space to relax in.
And, your friends get party fun as well as helping you to bring it to life.
Plus…
What could be more eco-friendly than creating a beautiful garden?
